A month of reflection

November is such a wonderful month. It brings a sense of calm as the end of the year draws close. This year, for me, has been a roller-coaster ride, there have been many ups and some downs, and it has taken a lot of hard work and grit to get through.

The month of November provided me with some time to unwind and focus on the things I love and thrive on— family, friends, travel, healthy eating, exercise and writing. Dedicating time to those moments of bliss each day was truly enriching. I finally found some serenity in my chaotic year.

As I began to reset my focus and transform from within, I felt in more control than I had been over the past 10 months.

November is the beginning of many end of year celebrations. Christmas parties are being planned, work is completed (I finally finished my Master in International Development! Woohoo!) and a number of book awards are announced. This year I was honoured to hear Charlie’s Adventures…in Hawaii was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards and later in the month I awoke to the magical news that Charlie’s Adventures…in Hawaii was an Award Finalist in the 2017 USA Best Book Awards. The Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards is one of most respected Awards in Australian children’s literature. Books are judged for their oral language, as the awards endeavour to promote quality Australian books that help children develop strong literacy foundations. To have my first book make this shortlist was an incredible moment. Similarly the American Book Fest Awards had over 2,000 entries from around the world, I was thrilled to hear the news that my book had been chosen amongst so many notable entries. Being recognised for these awards was just the reassurance I needed that all will be alright. To have this backing by those in the industry filled me with joy, I was beyond grateful.

November also took me to my happy place….the airport. I was bound for Vietnam. I had a whirlwind trip to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hue. I learnt a great deal on this trip and met some remarkable individuals doing truly inspiring work supporting communities across Vietnam. Being immersed in the Vietnamese culture helped me reset once more, my head spun with great ideas and plans for the future. I felt I was right where I needed to be and had clarity as to where I wanted to go. Airports and travel always seem to help me reflect on my purpose and provides me with a sense of direction.

What an amazing month! A month that fills me with motivation and encouragement for what lies ahead. It’s time to take flight!
