Rhinos and Zebras and Giraffes, Oh My!

Last month we journeyed to South Africa! The homeland of my husband and one of the most beautiful destinations in the world (yes, I could be slightly biased).

South Africa, as a country, has always fascinated me. It has breath taking landscapes, the friendliest people and a unique history and culture that leave a legacy of hope.

This trip was full of adventure and quality family time. We explored Cape Town (a city I adore so deeply) amidst the worst storm it faced in three decades. We found refuge in a snug winery in Constantia (our wine tour of Stellenbosch was abruptly put on hold due to the severe weather) and I was reunited with one of my best friends and her gorgeous baby girl, the laughter and warmth of that catch up was a true highlight. My dad and I explored the stunning Waterfront, dining on the most delicious seafood. We visited the spectacular Table Mountain and spent a day on Robben Island, where we heard powerful stories of great leaders and the endurance of the human spirit by ex-prisoners themselves. My daughter even had her first bee sting on the island, a truly memorable visit! Driving around the coastal city, it is difficult to not be in awe of its natural beauty. The grandeur of the mountain towering over every angle of the colorful character-rich city is extraordinary. Cape Town has held the title of my favourite place in the world for many years and after this trip it continues to be number one on my list!

Aside from Cape Town another highlight was going on a family safari in Kruger Park. Shouting in joy as we spotted the big five (the African lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino), laughing as we were escorted home by a family of giraffes who were on their leisurely evening walk and sharing stories with our dear ones was magical.

There were so many special moments on our trip. Watching my daughter bond with her grandparents, uncles and aunt, who live so far but are so near to our hearts, was incredible. Being reunited with our ‘lekker’ friends, having years and seas divide us but being able to pick up just where we left of, was delightful.

South Africa is home to so many memories and it is a country that evokes profound emotions. By now you know travel invigorates me and after this trip I come back enlivened and inspired. Stay tuned for what is to come….
