August was an uplifting month. In terms of my creativity, the positives of the last few weeks of July (see previous blog post) inspired me to reprioritise and make space for my writing projects.

I spent a lot of August refining my work in progress and reaching out to others for feedback to strengthen my story. I have often said how important it is to find your tribe, especially as a creative. To find people who are on a similar path to you, that you wholeheartedly trust with your deeply personal work and are willing to help you through. I am lucky that I have found some incredible individuals to share my writing journey with. They are continuously there to encourage and support me. They are there to lift me up when I am down (when I am overcome with doubt and fear), and they are there to celebrate my wins – even the small ones. I am so grateful to have met them.

It has been a daunting process creating my most recent story. It has taken a few years to get it out on paper. For some reason this particular project excites and scares me, all at the same time. It has challenged me as a writer. I had to let go of my usual processes and rely on my instincts – no planning, just channelling. The characters came first, introducing themselves to me one by one and rebelling against how I thought I should be writing them. They are strong-willed and have their own plan for this story. It’s their story and I’m merely the author noting it down. It’s extraordinary.

Finishing the next draft and being brave enough to share it with my tribe was probably the highlight of my month. I don’t think the story is quite there yet, but it has been a massive feat to get it to this stage.

Looking back on my writing adventure, I can’t believe how far I have come. I am learning so much with every story I am writing. I am learning so much from my tribe. I am leaning so much from my community. It’s been an incredible ride, living outside my comfort zone. I know there is much further I need to go personally to completely unleash my creative side but I am willing to give it a go in order to unearth it.

Aside from intently writing I spent a lot of the month enjoying the company of my family. One of the positives of going into another lockdown is more time with my children. I have been able to watch them grow together and see them develop. We’ve had so much fun in pure play. There has been lots of dance parties, nature walks, drawing and most importantly laughter. It truly has been an uplifting month!
