The sharing connection

We learn a great deal through our interactions with each other. As we follow our own path and fulfil our own audacious dreams, we learn many lessons along the way. By sharing our stories, our journey and understandings with others, we not only form a stronger community but we enlighten those around us, we let others see a glimpse of our world and if we are lucky, they may share with us a bit of theirs.

The connection that comes with sharing is exquisite. It is a life skill that has tremendous benefits on a personal and societal level. As parents, we often encourage our children to share and despite a few failed attempts, when your child actually grasps the concept of sharing, it is pure magic, their faces light up as they see the happiness they have bought to a friend through this simple act, gratification comes as much from giving as receiving.

Being buried under books the past few months as I attempt to finish my Masters degree, I have been felling like I haven’t shared myself with anyone. I was running on empty in desperate need to be around others and connect once again. During the month of September, I sought opportunities to be with those who inspire me, who make me laugh, enliven my creativity and are always willing to share their highlights and lowlights with me, after all, those are the individuals who help you learn the big lessons. Being around these beckons of light, I was given the reassurance I needed, I was not alone. Through sharing our challenges and success, I found the energy to just keep swimming (sorry, I couldn’t resist this reference, I have been watching Finding Dory every day with my daughter).

I was fortunate to attend the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCWBI) ACT Branch, Level Up conference. It was a wonderful day long event. With remarkable speakers and plenty of opportunities to connect through sharing your personal writing and illustrating experiences with like-minded individuals, it was just what I needed to get out of my funk. Hearing from others within the community, celebrating the ups and downs of the Children’s Book industry and being face-to-face with my why (my purpose) again, placed me in a bubble of bliss and enthusiasm. My head was spinning with stories to write and new goals to achieve. My dad picked me up from the conference and as great dads do, brought me back down to reality “after you finish your degree. You can’t take any more on just yet,” he shared his kind words of caution as I shared a smile, through that moment of connection we both knew that there were great things to come.

Being around people willing to share honestly and openly can offer incredible opportunities for growth. Witnessing the vulnerabilities and light-bulb moments that come from sharing is also a true gift. We are able to connect in a place of truth and sincerity. We learn from this connection and by sharing we too are gifted in community. I hope you seek moments to share, connect and listen, it is the best motivation and source of inspiration.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

A wonderful morning sharing some classic stories with a delightful group of children at a special story time event. Thank you Harry Hartog Bookseller for having me. It was so much fun reading Wombat Stew a book that holds lots of memories for me growing up!
