Just the beginning…
A new year creates the opportunity for a fresh start. It radiates an invigorated energy and motivates bigger dreams. As we board 2017 I can’t help but get a little excited for what is to come. It is an unwritten chapter with endless possibilities. I delight in the knowledge that there are new lessons to be learnt this year. New goals to be set and achieved. New adventures awaiting. The potential of pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone a little more and a chance to discover more about myself as I continue to grow and evolve.
I usually begin a new year by setting goals for the year ahead. This year I was fortunate to be able to reflect and set my intentions for the year whilst vacationing in Sri Lanka. For me it was going back to the beginning, where I was born and where my story started.
The highlight of my vacation was spending time in my Nana’s company. She is a remarkable woman. It was lovely seeing my daughter exchange cheeky moments with her. We talked about the past, the present and the future. We reminisced about my younger days, how I would perform to her and my Grandpa Charlie, singing songs and telling stories, and how I would insist she learns hip-hop dancing and would teach her the latest routines from my dance classes. She shared with me her wisdom in approaching the day-to-day, she revealed the importance of quiet reflection and being grateful for each moment we are given. She gave me a glimpse into her beginning, what life was like for her growing-up. She spoke fondly about always living by the beach and the sea and the joy and calm she feels being near them.
As my Nana and I spoke about our beginnings we saw how far we had come. Talking about our childhood helped us understand our true authenticity. We could draw parallels between what inspired us then and continues to inspire us now. These were lessons for me as a mother too, watching my daughter at her beginning, I am determined to nurture her authenticity, support her raw talents and be mindful of what inspires her. Looking back helped us see our path ahead more clearly. It gave us a foundation to build on and the courage to stay true to the essence of who we are.
The new year signifies new beginnings, it provides hope that the best is yet to come. Each year, I feel, features some sort of beginning. Last year, for me, was the beginning of the Charlie’s Adventures…. journey. It was the beginning of breaking through fear to find beauty on the other side. As January ends I am tickled to think, it’s just the beginning….
